Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such treatments need to be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication report a intense return of appetite.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
