The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
