The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
