The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a major awards ceremony nears, you'll find a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
